About Sierra City
Sierra City is a tiny Gold Rush-era town, located in the canyon of the North Yuba River in the northern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Although the town boasted a population of over 10,000 people in its heyday, our official population is now just 225. The town rests at the base of the awesome Sierra Buttes, which rise over 4,000 feet to a height of 8,587 feet.
Sierra City is about 2-1/2 hours drive from Sacramento, 4 hours from San Francisco, and 1-1/2 hours from Reno, Nevada.
Recreational Activities
Visitors to Sierra City will enjoy the year-round recreational and cultural activities in a quiet, historic atmosphere. The nearby Lakes Basin Recreation Area features over 45 alpine lakes located in the shadow of the Sierra Buttes. Scenic Highway SR49 parallels the sparkling North Fork of the Yuba River and wends its way through historic gold mining towns. A 20-minute drive provides access to numerous golf courses in Graeagle and its surrounding area.
Outdoor enthusiasts will delight in fishing, hiking, mounatain biking, boating, rafting, gold panning, rock climbing, bird watching and swimming. Culture buffs will appreciate the local museums, drama productions and concerts.
