History of Holly House

constructionBuilt by H. Watt Hughes (a partner in the Young America Mine) in 1886, the Holly House was known as “Hughes’ Folly” or the “Hughes’ Mansion” until it became the family home of L.H. Holley, who purchased it for $1,760 in 1911.

Through the years, it has served as a boarding house, as an annex to the Sierra Buttes Inn and as home to a number of families. Holly trees were planted in the front yard by one of the owners, and the building has been know as the Holly House ever since.

Innkeepers Rich and Mary Nourse purchased the home in 1974 and renovated it as their family residence.  (The photograph shows their daughter Holly Nourse during the renovation.)  In the fall of 1997, the opened the doors of the Holly House Bed and Breakfast Inn so that others might enjoy the magnificent old home.
